Position Purpose:

The Medical Assistant - PAR, Intern is a position designed to train medical assistant - PARs on the functions of medical assisting, including learning to assist the providers in front and back office procedures, it is the expectation that the Interns once trained will operate independently.As part of the intern process, it is the expectation that this position will be trained to provide back office support including rooming the patient, taking vital signs and weight, and once successful in demonstrating competence will be able to work independently and will have the ability to transfer into a Medical Assistant role.These responsibilities could include patient check in and checkout procedures.The incumbent will learn the responsibility of providing a direct liaison between provider and patient, making certain that the patient's questions and concerns have been addressed by the appropriate provider.

Nature and Scope:

The Medical Assistant-PAR Intern will learn the back office duties, including:
escorting the patient from the waiting room to the examination room promptly; taking vital signs as per guidelines; documenting all patient communications and faxing prescription refills; preparing lab specimens for processing; completing the necessary referral forms and obtaining authorizations for referrals in assigned pod and keeping records of same; scheduling patients for tests; placing and receiving phone calls in the order of importance for same day appointments; and filing appropriate paperwork into the patient charts to become part of a permanent record.

The incumbent uses professionalism and diplomacy with interacting with patients of all ages, their families, physicians, physician office staff and other health care providers in the accurate collecting of demographic, clinical and financial information in person or via telephone interviews.

The Medical Assistant-PAR Intern takes an active role in decreasing accounts receivables by learning and following established guidelines, regulations, policies and procedures during the registration process in accurately:

* Obtaining and accurately entering demographic, clinical, financial information into the computer system;

* Explaining and obtaining signatures on clinical and financial forms;

* Identifying insurance payer sources;

* Identifying payer order sequence;

* Verifying insurance eligibility;

* Obtaining insurance notification;

* Charge order entry processing;

* Determining estimated cost for services being rendered;

* Identifying and collecting patient financial obligation amounts, i.e. co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles, etc.; and

* Documenting all information collected timely and in accordance with department requirements.

This position will keep abreast of all standards to assure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agencies including third party reimbursement requirements.

Challenges to this position may be complicated by new techniques for patient care, paperwork, changing system, department and hospital policies, increased information available on each patient, and fluctuations in staffing.

This position does provide patient care.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Mathematical skills.

Experience:

No previous experience required.

License(s):

Current State of Nevada license for Office Laboratory Assistant or an application must be submitted within 90 days of employment. Failure to apply for and/or receive license within 90 days will result in discharge.

Certification(s):

Current AHA BLS/CPR or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment required.

Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or EMT certification preferred

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
